Objective: Learners will recognize food safety hazards (physical, chemical and pathogenic), and demonstrate how to prevent these hazards when handling produce on the farm.
Tools used: Adobe Captivate, Premiere Pro, Character Animator, After Effects, Illustrator and Photoshop
This online, interactive training is directed at new farm workers who need to follow food safety practices while harvesting, washing and packing produce. The learner is guided by an animated narrator named Farmer Jenny. I created Farmer Jenny as a puppet in Adobe Character Animator. She addresses the learner through a series of short videos covering the importance of food safety, the hazards that exist and what you can do to prevent those hazards. After the videos, there are knowledge checks and then a food safety question with multiple choice questions and some simple branching scenarios.
The information in the training was informed by Nick Lubecki, farm manager, and adapted from Penn State Extension’s “Food Safety Field Training Kit for Fresh Produce Handlers” and “Best Practices for Fresh Produce Food Safety” booklet (2019).
